How to Create Light Sabers in CS3

Hi everybody! I really don't know how I should start off my blog. What, with me being a coder and not a copy-writer. So the best thing for me to do is forget all of the pleasantries and get straight into it.

Now that all of that is out of my system, I shall explain...
The first thing you will need to do is get a raw photo. This can be any type of photo of you holding a "base" for your light saber. The light saber base should stand out a little bit, what I personally like to use is a sword as they have pretty decent bases.

Once you have the photo, import it into photoshop and add a "layer" (screen, transparent background) to the image.

The next thing you want to do is draw a line to represent your sword. At this point the line will have square edges, but do not worry about this for the minute.
When you are happy with the positioning of the sword you then merge it with the screen layer you added in an earlier step.

So you have your layer now, depending on how you want your sabre to look (it really depends on preference) to create a duplicate. I usually make around five or six duplications of the layer. The reason for this will become apparant at a later point.

This next bit will make your "white lines look just like sabers.
Select one of the layers and add a "gausian blur" when you get the screen to ask you how much you would like to add my suggestions are and these are per layer, 10, 20, 40, 30, 1. If you copy my numbers the first time, and then you can experiment with your own, once you know what they mean.

After applying all of the blurs merge all of the screen duplates together, (NOTE: DO NOT merge with the photo just yet).
Once the saber is merged into one layer find adjustments in of the menus and choose a color. Choose Maximum red for the shadows, highlights and the other one, whose name escapes me.
Anyway there you have a light sabre, some screen shots on the side to hopefully help you make it proper. Well let me know how you get on. I will include a link to upload your images soon. Until then post them on flicker and give me the link.
